Special Places of Interest

Riga is perfect city for those that want to experience the Baltic in style. It is regarded as the Paris of the North as its architecture proves and since Latvian independence Riga has an abundance of excellent restaurants, theatre and the arts. When visiting Riga there are two places one must visit. For style and elegance and star performance you must visit Latvian National Opera, famed for its history and amazing talent. However if you really want to understand both Latvian history and people you should take time to visit the Occupation Museum, located in Old town of Riga. That shows in graphic details the struggle the Latvian people have undergone to retain their culture and independence.

Outdoor Activities

Siguda National Park is also very much worth a visit both in the summer or winter months. The National Park of Sigulda which is located only 20 miles from Riga offers canoeing, rafting, downhill skiing, cross country skiing and tobogganing. There are also many good golf courses surrounding Riga and the countryside beyond as well as ice-skating rinks in the Old City – sometimes even in the main square during the Xmas period in Riga … it may be cold and snowy but where better to feel true Xmas hospitality.

Travel

Riga International Airport is about 20-30 minutes by taxi and 30-40 minutes by regular bus service from the centre of Riga and Riga Penthouse. Once you are in Riga hiring a car is not essential as the apartment is located very centrally and there are a lot what to see and do in Riga itself. Taxi fares around the city are at very affordable prices. But if you want to enjoy the surrounding areas outside Riga then you may consider to hire a car from the usual car hire outlets. However if you are planning a day trip to Jurmala then taxi fare one direction would cost you around €30 or on another hand you may choose to go there by train leaving from central train station (10 min walk from the apartment).

Useful Information

The nearest well stocked supermarket is only 2 min walk away along Kr. Barona street and the main food market selling all the local produce is about 2 miles away by bus/taxi.

but on a ever 2nd Saturday of the month the local Farmers market is held just less than 5 minutes walk away in Berga Bazara Courtyard.

Recommended local restaurants are Kafe Osiriss (1min away) that offers excellent food all day long and just 2min away – Gallery Istaba which is a combined art gallery on the ground floor with the restaurant  on the first floor. This place offers you top quality home made cuisine served by a local celebrity chef. Making reservations are highly advisable as both places are highly popular by locals.

The best restaurant in town is Vincents run by Chef de Patron Martins Ritins. It’s about 20-30 minutes walk from the apartment or 5-10 min by taxi where you can enjoy world class food and service.

Banks and currency exchange are located all over the city but there is a currency exchange office 25 meters from my door.

The new state of art Galleria Riga shopping centre on Blaumana Street with the biggest roof top restaurant in Europe is less than 5 minutes walk away

The best views of the city can be seen from the top of the hotel Reval Latvia from its Penthouse bar which has a 360 degree view of the city. The old town has many historic buildings displaying the rich history of Riga from the mid 15c to modern day. The architecture is strong evidence the Riga was one of the main cities in the Hanseatic league and consequently was popular with the rich and famous of the European and Russian aristocrats and merchant class. There are also many Gym and Yoga facilities within 5 minutes walk of the apartment.
